Those who settled in the southern colonies were from no mans land in Great Britain
Lawless cultures value different things (strength / willingness to fight) over more civilized cultures (science / intellect)
Southern whites had pride in their culture, not in any particular positive but rather over being slighted — their culture promoted violence to defend themselves from people who slighted them
Most lynching was of white southerners
“Too poor to keep slaves, too proud to work”
It was widely known that southerners did not like to work
20% of southern whites were illiterate compared to 1% in the north
8% of patents went to southerners even thought they accounted for 1/3 of populations
Rape was punished by hanging in the north but was punished less than petty crime in the south
White southern cultures mirrored the cultures of scottland and whales where they came from. Those cultures eventually changed overseas, but never in the south.
