When conversation seems impossible

An impossible conversation is one that takes place over such a wide divide of beliefs that it feels futile

Beliefs are important because people act on them. Act on them regardless of if they are right or wrong. More often than not they are wrong.

Conversation is a much better way to change beliefs than force. Very few people change their beliefs after being punched in the head.

The goal of these conversations is to have them not become defensive and hold onto their beliefs more firmly and rather be open to changing their mind

Fundamentals

All expertise is built upon fundamentals

  1. Goals — what is your purpose in the conversation
  2. Partnerships — be partners not adversaries

The most powerful tools are kindness compassion and empathy

In the Korean War most defectors from the US came from a single group who was indoctrinated with the most severe anti Korea propaganda.

Shift your goal from winning to understanding

The mark of an educated mind is to understand an idea without accepting it

Don’t parallel talk (start talking about your trip to Cuba when someone tells you they just went to Cuba

No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care
