If you're going to join a company, pick a rocketship
Hiring
Co-founders
- Co-founders should already know each other
- Should be relentlessly resourceful, tough, and calm
- Co-founders should have expertise in the space // have a tech person on board
- Remote co-founding teams do not work out well
Employees
- Be sparing with who you hire, less is better
- Early bad hires are hard to recover from, the earlier the more difficult to recover
- Time spent hiring should be either 0% or 25%
- Mediocre engineers do NOT build great companies
- Optimize for aptitude over experience when hiring
- 3 things to look for when hiring someone:
- Are they smart?
- Do they get things done?
- Do I want to spend a lot of time around them?
- Work with someone / call references and ask pointed questions
- Hire someone you would be comfortable reporting to
Equity
- You should give 10% of the company to the first 10 employees to be earned over 4 years
