Liberal social justice wants to fix the house of liberalism. It thinks the system is generally good but isn’t quite living up to its promises (MLK). Social justice fundamentalism (wokeness) wants to knock the entire house down. They don’t just have different goals they have opposite goals.

Conventional wisdom goes out of style way faster than it used to. The world is changing fast.

Don’t avoid sad thoughts and then make bad decisions. Sad thoughts are okay because they help improve our decision.

The news zooms in on the worst that can be found on planet earth. That’s what the incentives demand.

Reality is mostly boring. Reality shows are always interesting. It’s junk food. It caters to our primitive mind. Politics is also mostly boring. Partisan news makes it into a reality TV show. Most people are into politics can’t name any state representatives. It’s political junk food. People are addicted to the real housewives of Washington DC.

At the top of the ladder you think your opponents are wrong. At the bottom of the ladder you think your opponents are evil.

It’s important to zoom out before you explore a problem. That’s the purpose of the book analogy. Being born today without knowing any history is like trying to figure out what the coastline looks like from the beach. It’s much easier to do from a helicopter. It’s hard to know the exact arc of the narrative today. It’s will be much easier in 100 years with hindsight. But we need to figure it out now. We need to contextualize using history.
